Fong > Like other waters in the Northern Territory, there are plenty of crocodiles to be seen. Be careful where you swim, a few people are killed each year by crocodiles. Poisonous jellyfish plague the Northern Territory beaches during certain parts of the year, so perhaps it is best to swim only in swimming pools!
Fong > Another crocodile at Yellow Water Billabong.
Crocodiles have powerful jaws which can exert strong closing pressure, but are quite weak at opening. In October 2004, a 60 year old woman managed to 'wrestle a croc' with partial success by sitting on the croc's back and holding the jaw shut when the crocodile was dragging away a man.
Fong > Younger crocodiles were more energetic in jumping for the meat.
Fong > Melaleuca, being the old and dominant fellow he is, took many, many hard looks at the meat before opening his jaws....
Fong > A little bit of meat tempts the crocodiles to come out!
Fong > Crocodiles are now a protected species in Australia, and quite a few can be seen during a short river cruise.
Fong > Melaleuca is an old male crocodile on the Adelaide River. I think Melaleuca is about seventy years of age. His right eye and face is damaged from a fight, and his teeth are somewhat worn. Apparantly, he features in a National Geographic magazine as 'the most photographed crocodile in the world'.
