Base of Purple Cloud cable car
2007_2_11 Emerald Valley
20070819_0086 Base of the White Goose cable car, Saturday about 12 noon.
The other end of the queue is not in sight...it is somewhere to the right of this view, the wait took about two hours.
20070819_0090 View from the white goose cable car. Standing room only!
20070819_0097 White goose cable car. See if you can identify the people in the front row!
20070819_0109 Fire hydrant in the middle of nowhere!
20070819_0111 One of the Huangshenensis pine trees. Jiang Zemin wrote a poem about this tree.
20070819_0114 View from the Xihai hotel window.
20070820_0148 Xihai lookout.
20070820_0159 The view over Xihai was magnificent.
20070820_0160 Steps going from Xihai to Grand Canyon of the West Sea.
20070820_0165 Great scenery over Xihai! Unfortunately, despite staying two nights on top of the mountain, and having about two walking days, we only walked a fraction of the paths on Huangshan.
20070820_0188 Lots of craggy formations in the valley of Xihai.
Flying over Rock, viewed from a very long distance! The path from Purple Cloud south to the Flying Over Rock is a steep uphill climb.
The next day, XiHai lives up to its name, and is covered in a 'sea' of mist.
20070821_0229 Lookout over the West Sea
20070821_0231 Coming down the Purple Cloud cable car. Much less crowded, and no queue (it was a weekday, though). The view looked like it would be spectacular, if only it wasn't so misty!
20070821_0242 FIne weather at the base of the mountain. It was raining up on top!
翡翠谷 (Fei3cui4gu3) Emerald Valley (also known as 情人谷 qing2ren2gu3 Lovers' Valley, but I don't remember seeing any English titles at the park).
Recently well known for being the setting of several scenes from a well known movie...
Lots of lovely little water falls here.
20070821_0251 And even more waterfalls...
20070821_0252 ...and more waterfalls
20070821_0253 Despite the cloudy weather and rain on top of Huangshan, it was a warm and humid day in the 30s down in this valley of waterfalls. And we had less than two hours to go up the valley. We didn't really have a chance to see all the waterfalls...
20070821_0257 One of the waterfalls where a scene of 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' was filmed. The wedding paraphernalia is somewhat distracting.
20070821_0262 Lots of tea fields around HuangShan.
20070821_0266 The old bridge at Tunxi
20070821_0267 LaoJie (Old Street, sometimes called Ancient Street) is on the near side of the bridge.
20070821_0274 花山谜窟 'Huashan Mistery Grottos (sic)', near Tunxi. About a 15 kuai taxi ride (only took ten to twenty minutes) from Tunxi.
20070821_0280 Doesn't look like they trusted the cavern ceiling to hold up by itself. This and the previous photograph are of Grotto No. 3.
20070821_0282 Another view from the main grotto. There are several dozen grottos in this park.
20070821_0283 The combination of a hot and humid day outside, and the cool air inside the grotto, creates a 'cloud layer' at the entrance of the cave.
20070821_0292 Another grotto at the 'Mistery' grotto (No. 24). Not really as impressive as the tourist photographs suggested.
